9th Umeå Renewable Energy Meeting, 14–17 February 2017

The Umeå Renewable Energy Meeting (UREM) is an annual event at Umeå University since 2009. The meeting is highly interdisciplinary, with speakers and attendees having backgrounds in physics, chemistry, biology and physiology. The aim is to strengthen the renewable energy related research at Umeå University and SLU that is carried out in our research strong environments. ‘Meet the speaker lunches’ are organized for students and postdocs, and three public lectures for pupils of the eighth grade will be held.

The conference, organized in a single-track fashion, with a number of different and complementary topical sub-sessions, has grown continuously from around 75 attendees in 2009 to more than 250 attendees in 2015. The evaluations of all conferences up to date have been highly positive. In particular, the participants have appreciated the broad scope of the conference, providing a unique interdisciplinary meeting opportunity between researchers from different fields, sharing the same ultimate goal.

The programme can be found at the meeting website. Registration for the meeting is necessary – please sign up using the online registration form.

  • Deadline for abstract submission: 25 January 2017
  • Deadline for registration: 7 February 2017

Each year we select a “hot theme” for the conference, while making sure that the broad scientific perspective, which has become its trademark, is maintained. This year will focus on artificial photosynthesis, and solar fuel production from algae. At our conference we aim to create opportunities for meetings between researchers from different research areas, as well as create meetings between students and established researchers. In line with this, UREM 2017 will contain four specific activities, besides the traditional lectures and key-notes; i) we will have a public outreach lecture adapted for students in grade eight and nine, and their teachers for; ii) we will have a plenary lectures, presenting an overview of the challenges and potential on all areas of renewable energy  iii) the conference will be scheduled so that we can integrate students from the Civil engineering program in Bioresource engineering, and Civil engineering program in Energy technology, and iv) each lunch will be organized with “meet a researcher table”, allowing graduate and undergraduate students to meet established researchers.

Organising committee:

  • Thomas Wågberg, Department of Physics, Umeå University
  • Christiane Funk, Department of Chemistry, Umeå University
  • Johannes Messinger, Department of Chemistry, Umeå University
  • Per Gardeström, Department of Plant Physiology, Umeå Plant Science Centre, Umeå University
  • Göran Samuelsson, Department of Plant Physiology, Umeå Plant Science Centre, Umeå University
  • Hannele Tuominen, Department of Plant Physiology, Umeå Plant Science Centre,  Umeå University

In a further effort to broaden and concurrently ensure a steady development of our UREM conference we have now also decided to co-organize the conference together with research groups at Uppsala University, in specific together with groups within the consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis (CAP). This means that the UREM conference 2017 will be held at Umeå University, while the UREM 2018 conference will be held at Uppsala University.
